Walk to School Day - This is a state wide event held every year. The first or second Wednesday of every October, Explorer and Discovery Schools participate in this event with bused students being dropped off at the middle School to walk to school. Students who are driven to school are encouraged to walk or ride their bikes to school. Parents can consider stopping at McCormick Park and walking with their child to school. By participating, it helps reduce traffic congestion, CUt Down on Auto emmissions and builds a stronger sense of community. The common goal of improving conditions for walking and bicycling brings families, neighbors, school officials and community leaders together.
The Feelin' Good Mileage Club - This FREE walking program is for all students DK - 5th grade. Registration for the Feelin' Good Mileage Club will be sent home during the last week of January. Students can register the month of February either on-line or by mailing in the registration form. The program will begin the first Monday after spring break and is held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday during lunch recess. The program will end the first Friday in June. The proven benefits of regular physical activity for children include: builds and maintains healthy bones, muscles, and joints; helps control weight, builds lean muscle and reduces fat; improves sense of self-image and autonomy; improves brain function; fosters healthy social and emotional development.
REgister your CHild and encourage their progress during the program. parent volunteers are needed to help with this during lunch recess. Contact williamston elementary ptsa, Mrs. Fuller or mr. Plaxton to volunteer.
Kids heart challenge - the kids heart challenge is a fund raiser and service learning event that raises money for the american heart association and the fight against heart disease. The event is also a great way for our Fit for Life program to earn money for much needed equipment. The event takes place during your student's Fit for Life class on chosen dates in February. Information and collection envelopes are sent home the second week of January. Collection envelopes are due the Friday prior to the event. Money collected is used to help aid heart research and education in the area of heart disease. In addition, our school receives gift certificates to purchase physical education equipment based on the amount of money raised.
ACES (All Children Exercising Simultaneously) - The first Wednesday of every May, is the world wide event "ACES", from 10:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. All Students at Discovery and Explorer Elementary will participate in a variety of exercises and physical Activities at the same time. "ACES" is typically held on the playground as long as the weather cooperates.
