Welcome!
This website was developed to give you information about the Fit for Life program and related activities at Discovery and Explorer Elementary Schools.
WHY DO STUDENTS HAVE FIT FOR LIFE? Research data proves that physical fitness is directly related to brain function and development. Physical exercise directly impacts learning. Exercise is necessary in order to keep muscles, bones, lungs and the heart strong and functioning well as a child grows and develops. Physical fitness is needed throughout one's lifetime in order to maximize health and wellness. The healthier we are, the better quality of life we have. Fit for Life teaches your child skills to stay fit their entire life and contributes to keeping them fit while a student in school.
WHY DO STUDENTS HAVE TWO TEACHERS FOR THE SAME SUBJECT? The State of Michigan has a "Best Practices" criteria that is recommended and rewarded if school districts implement those best practices. One of them is to provide common planning time for grade level teachers. For example, in order for all six first grade teachers to have their planning time at the same time, there needs to be six Academic Related Curriculum (ARC) classrooms for each class to attend. With the number of students in each elementary school, we can only accommodate that with a schedule that has both Fit for Life teachers teaching classes from both buildings. As a result, during a six week ARC rotation your child will have Fit for Life for two of the weeks. One week will be with Mr. Plaxton and another week with Mr. Williams. In addition to Fit for Life, your child will have one week of Art, Music, Spanish and STEAM.

PROPER GYM SHOES ARE NEEDED FOR FIT FOR LIFE CLASSES
THANK YOU FOR SENDING CLEAN, APPROPRIATE GYM SHOES FOR FIT FOR LIFE!
Thank you to all who help their children remember their tennis shoes for Fit for Life! Your child is able to fully participate in all we do and get much needed exercise to ensure body and brain growth and development. For your child’s safety and the safety of others, cowboy boots, snow boots, fashion boots, slippers, slip on shoes, dress shoes, sandals, flip flops or shoes with no coverage on the heels are not permitted to use for Fit for Life participation. If possible, please provide an inexpensive pair of gym shoes for your child to keep at school. This ensures your child will be prepared and able to participate fully in Fit for Life in both Discovery and Explorer each week!
Thank you! Mr. Plaxton and Mr. Williams
PLEASE HELP KEEP THE DISCOVERY GYM FLOOR SAFE FOR ALL ACTIVITIES.
The Discovery gym floor is used by approximately 850 students each week during the school day, and potentially another 500 students each week in the after school hours. Gym shoes that are worn on the playground or on the street have dirt on them, even if we can’t see it. With the high number of children using the gym, the dirt rubs on the floor, acting like sandpaper. What remains is the powder from the rubbed off wax, along with dirt and dust. It makes the gym floor extremely slippery, preventing students from being able to participate in any activity in which we run, stop quickly, change directions quickly, dodge and other such movement. It limits all students from many aerobic activities and games. Please help keep the Discovery gym floor clean by providing an inexpensive pair of gym shoes that can be left at school. This will ensure your child can participate in Fit for Life, but help keep our gym floor clean and safe for all who use it during and after school.
Thank you! Mr. Williams
